Strait of Hormuz Crisis Shuts Down India’s Ceramics Industry
The Iran-Israel conflict has significantly impacted India’s ceramics industry, with nearly 80% of factories in Morbi, Gujarat, ceasing operations due to critical gas and propane shortages. Morbi alone contributes to 80% of India’s ceramics industry, and the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has resulted in 21 vessels being stuck, carrying essential energy supplies. The shutdown, which is expected to continue until at least April 15, will result in 400,000 workers, mostly migrant workers, becoming unemployed. Although the government is ensuring adequate gas supplies for households and agriculture, manufacturers face difficulties with fluctuating fuel prices and dry supplies. Traders have indicated that if operations do not commence soon, there will be critical shortages in India, and there will be significant delays and price increases in international orders to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
